There was an election tonight. Most of the people who Other People say are smart said that the voters did a very stupid thing in electing Trump. Some of the people who Other People say are smart actually supported Trump. But the Other People said they weren’t so smart in this case, said they had ulterior motives or simply ignored them. If my kids listened to me, I might have a conversation like this:
Me: Sometimes the smart thing to do is what all the Other People say is a stupid thing. Don’t let them dissuade you.
Daughter: But don’t the Other People also say you are doing a stupid thing when you actually are doing a stupid thing as well?
Me: Yes, that can be true. But the Other People might also say you are doing a smart thing when you are actually doing a stupid thing, too. Or, on rare occasions, they may actually say you are doing a smart thing while you are in fact doing the smart thing.
Daughter: So what’s your point.
Me: Nobody knows a fucking thing. Think for yourself.
Me: And don’t tell your mother I said “fucking.”
